Studio Diary - 01/15/2001 (Day #9)
Pete Trewavas:Hi. Today is Monday 15 of Jan which means that it is my Birthday and has been for some time already. I have been trying to work out whether it makes a difference that I'm in America and so a different time zone to the one I was born in?
Well yesterday was an amazing day for me. We started at noon doing bass on the first track, which involves listening through to bass and drums and really getting very picky about every note I play. Is it in time should it be a bit lazy or right in with the drums, should I play root notes of the chords or do some runs, all that kind of stuff that really only bass players can be bothered with but can make a huge difference to records. Well bass players like to think so. and I had the luxury of about 4-5 hour on my own with Ed the engineer, working on the first thing what ever it's called, and it really does sound great I was so wired after that I was runnin' around like a little kid for hours after.
All this time Neal and Mike were wondering around out side on the verander/patio,and Roine was sitting at the back of the studio offering encouragement Then we recorded drums and everyone on the rest of the second song. I call it a song but song is to trivial a word for such a journey of musical wonderment. to give you an idea, we were talking about a part right near the end of the whole thing, but still had five minutes to go.
It was a good day after the bad start on Saturday. Today we are going to work on some other ideas left out of the two biggies, and try a slightly different approach to molding them together. I'll let you know how we get on

Well, today was an incredibly productive day....I FINISHED my drum tracks!!!

But it wasn't only that which made it so productive:
We went into today's session not exactly sure where we were gonna go or what we were going to do....and ended the session with 2 more songs arranged and recorded!
First we started with assembling all of the smaller bits we had flying around and making a big piece out of them. What we ended up with is a (roughly) 12 minute track which I think we are going to name "Suite Charlotte Pike" (Dark Horse studios is on Old Charlotte Pike, so it is in keeping with the tradition of Abbey Road, which we modeled this medley after)...This track is so incredibly cool! After totally progging out with the 2 big epics, I needed a dose of Ringo before finishing up the session!
The other track we recorded is a cover song which I am not going to name just yet, but it came out awesome. It's likely that this will not make the "normal" CD, but will be used for another limited edition 2-CD set like last time....We'll see.....
Anyways, I'm psyched to be done....Over the next few days, I can relax a bit (I've been a bit edgy throughout the writing process...it's hard with so many chefs in the kitchen!)...We'll be doing various overdubs...I'll do some of whatever vocals I will be doing....and then we need to start preparing for the NAMM gig....
