The Neal Morse Band
The Grand Experiment

For the first time ever prog icon Neal Morse came into a recording session with his long time friend and collaborator Mike Portnoy, Randy George, Bill Hubauer and Eric Gillette...with NOTHING! He had no prepared material at all. Neal comments, "I wanted to see what it would be like to create freely in the room with no preconceived notions. It was quite a risk!" On previous albums, like the Testimony album for example, Morse had the entire album written in advance. "I used to be rather paranoid about whether things would turn out in the short space of time we had available...so I would fill all the space in advance!" This album was totally different. "I made a lot of room for the other guys to create and express themselves and the result is outstanding! We wanted to experiment, do something a bit different, and see what everyone is capable of...we found out...in SPADES!" The results are obvious! This was a "grand experiment" that produced something far beyond anyone's expectations!

The Grand Experiment will be released in 3 formats:
  • Single Disc
  • 3 Disc Special Edition Digipak (containing the main disc, bonus audio disc featuring 3 unreleased studio tracks and 2 live tracks from the Morsefest weekend, and a "making of" documentary DVD in special packaging)
  • LP + 2CD Set (containing main disc, and bonus audio disc)
The main disc, contains 5 tracks, 2 long prog epics that are sure to be favorites for years to come, as well as 3 shorter songs including the catchy title track "The Grand Experiment." Mixed by Rich Mouser.

Track Listing:
  1. Following the Call
  2. The Grand Experiment
  3. Waterfall
  4. Agenda
  5. Alive Again
The band will be heading out on tour in support of The Grand Experiment, February 2015!

FLYING COLORS: SECOND NATURE - Release in Sept / Tour in Oct!

29th July 2014
FLYING COLORS TO RELEASE SECOND NATURE VIA MUSIC THEORIES / MASCOT LABEL GROUP ON SEPTEMBER 29 IN EUROPE / UK AND THE 30TH IN NORTH AMERICA
TOUR DATES ANNOUNCED FOR OCTOBER!

Morse, Portnoy, LaRue, McPherson and Morse announce special brief tour to commence October 2 in Los Angeles with shows planned for Chicago, Philadelphia, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, England and France

Rotterdam, Netherlands --- Mascot Label Group and Flying Colors have announced a September 29 release date in Europe and the U.K. for the band's SECOND NATURE album via the Music Theories label. The critics were united in acknowledging the eponymously titled debut album from Flying Colors among the most fascinating releases of 2012. Teaming the talents of such heavyweight names as Deep Purple/Dixie Dregs/ex-Kansas guitarist Steve Morse, drummer Mike Portnoy (Transatlantic, Winery Dogs, ex-Dream Theater), Neal Morse (Transatlantic, Spock’s Beard and a prolific solo artist), bass player Dave LaRue (Dixie Dregs, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and more) with a comparatively new talent, pop singer/songwriter Casey McPherson, the band challenged conventional wisdom about combining virtuoso music and melodic songwriting. Or, as the quintet’s modus operandi was once memorably defined by Executive Producer Bill Evans, ‘crafting new-fashioned music the old-fashioned way’.

The mission was to team a pool of virtuoso players, a pop singer/songwriter, and the right producer—to create sophisticated music that was accessible. Over 100 singer/songwriters were considered for the role. Portnoy pitched the idea of approaching McPherson, a member of the group Alpha Rev, whose 2010 album called ‘New Morning’ dominated the Billboard Top Ten for 17 weeks. McPherson went on to prove the ‘x factor’ that elevated Flying Colors above the norm.

The UK’s Classic Rock magazine hailed the band’s debut as “fearless”, praising its “Journey-sized choruses” and referencing artists as diverse as The Beatles, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Doors, Muse and even Frank Sinatra. In late 2012, the band toured the United States and Europe, dazzling fans with Flying Colors originals and selections from the catalogues of the five members. The chemistry can be heard on ‘Live In Europe’, a Number #1-charting Blu-ray, DVD, CD and vinyl package recorded and shot in Tilburg, Holland.

Schedules allowing, the protagonists had always viewed Flying Colors as a genuine band as opposed to a mere side project, and quietly yet purposefully they began writing a second studio album. From the first writing session to final delivery of the masters in July 2014, the process took almost a year and half, albeit in four distinct stages: writing sessions via Skype in January/February 2013, another burst of writing and recording at Neal Morse’s house in Nashville, a trip to Portnoy’s home that spawned five additional songs, and finally individual recording/arrangement throughout the spring of 2014.

“The first album was very much a blind date,” Mike Portnoy explains. “Although we already had ‘Team Dregs’ of Steve/Dave and ‘Team Transatlantic’ of myself/Neal, it was the first time that the five of us – seven if you include Bill Evans and Peter Collins – had collaborated together as a group. This time there was an existing chemistry, we had not only the prior experiences of making the debut album but also the 2012 tour as well.”

Sporting stunning artwork from the legendary designer Hugh Syme (Rush, Aerosmith, Def Leppard, Whitesnake) and bookended by two tracks of truly epic stature – ‘Open Up Your Eyes’ and the multiple-part ‘Cosmic Symphony’ – the album is every bit as breathtaking as the debut. Portnoy stresses that the music’s proggier path was “not conscious at all.” The drummer continues: “Direction was never even discussed. We just did what we do. I think perhaps not having a producer to ‘trim the fat’ possibly led to the songs breathing and expanding a bit more.” Perhaps Steve Morse sums things up best with the statement: “This is an album full of many layers. The more you listen, the more you can hear. It’s an album to keep listening to.”

I look at Flying Colors LIVE as something that is not to be taken for granted and expected to always happen. It's something that is very special and unique and should be embraced as such.Because of our situation, it's safe to suggest to people to try to come to us if we can't come to you!

Transatlantic world premiere video for ‘Shine’ and reveal formats for ‘Kaleidoscope’

2nd December 2013
Progressive-rock super-group Transatlantic, featuring Mike Portnoy, Neal Morse, Roine Stolt and Pete Trewavas will release their brand new fourth studio album ‘Kaleidoscope’ on the 27th January 2014, and they are now very pleased to be able to bring you the band’s first ever music video for the track ‘Shine’. You can see the video now, premiering over at Prog and Classic Rock Magazine’s websites:

http://www.progrockmag.com/video/transatlantic-premiere-shine

Mike Portnoy had this to say:
"Here it is...the very first Transatlantic music video! We shot this video this past Sept in London the day after the Progressive Music Awards. What a beautiful setting it was to shoot in!
Picking a song to do a video for wasn't easy as most TA songs are about 30 minutes...hahaha!
But Shine was a cool choice as it’s such a beautiful song with all 4 of us sharing the vocals.
Enjoy!"

Roine Stolt adds this about his memories of the day:
‘Big day Sept 4th – Transatlantic’s 1st ever "music video" - Starting the day at 6:00am in the hotel toilet in London with a stomach flu…..or wait…..it was the PROG awards night yesterday - too much to drink ? or food poisoning ? - no, it's possibly a better option to say "I had a monumental hangover" as the true bad boy of prog I am - that'll give more cred. That'll get me more fans.
Back to reality - after a nightmarish looong drive to the chapel where we were supposed to film - finding it to be a really cool location, I can sense it's gonna look great, trying to get some rest on the lawn while the video crew sets up - we knew them from our Shepherds Bush DVD filming back in 2010 - they're really nice people. The sun is shining - I realize we're in a sort of "retirement area" neighbourhood, very London - very cool - I feel like a Beatle.

Taking all the sickness in, I still felt it was a good day - and thankfully getting better by the hour. All band and crew are so professional so it makes it an easy ride, also thankful that the song itself almost gets better with each run thru. Now, I do not recommend improvising too much on your guitar solo or making it too complicated if you ever record a song with the prospect of doing a video later. At least my small Swedish Neanderthal brain cannot recreate the genius of Master Stolt, it's too many frikkin' notes and bends and too angular, or plain weird. I soooo wished I was Keith Richards, Neil Young or Chuck Berry.
Long day - many takes - lunch - stomach feeling better. Sun goes down - back to hotel and dinner with Mr. Morse, nice chat about music, God and life and …..good,good night‘s sleep - then heading home to the land of the Vikings.

Well kids - just another day in an insanely rich, famous and iconic rock star‘s life.
Enjoy the ride.’

It can also be revealed now that ‘Kaleidoscope’ will be released on four different formats, including a limited edition Deluxe Artbook with 2CDs, DVD and Bonus 5.1 Mix DVD-Video in an LP-sized book with loads of pictures, liner notes and a lenticular card cover. PROGRESSIVE NATION RETURNS IN 2014!

12th August 2013
"PROGRESSIVE NATION AT SEA 2014" MAKES ITS MAIDEN VOYAGE FEB 18TH THRU 22ND

FEATURING TRANSATLANTIC, PORTNOY SHEEHAN MACALPINE SHERINIAN, JON ANDERSON, ADRIAN BELEW'S POWER TRIO, DEVIN TOWNSEND, KING'S X, SPOCK'S BEARD, THE FLOWER KINGS, PAIN OF SALVATION, RIVERSIDE, ANIMALS AS LEADERS, THE SAFETY FIRE, TONY HARNELL & BUMBLEFOOT, BIGELF, BEARDFISH, THE DEAR HUNTER, HAKEN, JOLLY AND NEXT TO NONE

Progressive Nation is hitting the high seas in 2014! Join us in this inaugural sailing from February 18th – 22nd 2014 on the luxurious Norwegian Pearl heading from Miami to Great Stirrup Cay and Freeport, Bahamas. This music festival at sea gives you an experience that a land festival just can’t match. In addition to 4 days in the beautiful Caribbean and all the amenities of a cruise ship; you will enjoy music from morning ‘til night with over 40 shows on multiple stages, along with activities, Q&A’s, panels and workshops from your favorite artists.

PROGRESSIVE NATION founder Mike Portnoy elaborates:
"In 2008 & 2009, I created a touring package called "Progressive Nation" and with Dream Theater headlining, we did three full tours (two in North America and one in Europe) that showcased a variety of bands that embraced the spirit and musicality of progressive music.

Well after a 5 year hiatus, I have decided to resurrect Progressive Nation and this time we are taking it to the seas!
But rather than a 4 band bill like previous Progressive Nation tours, we have expanded the bill to OVER A DOZEN of today's greatest progressive bands, musicians and artists! (and there may be one or two more still to be confirmed)

Myself and my former DT bandmate Derek Sherinian have teamed up with Sixthman (who have done incredibly successful cruises with Kid Rock, Lynyrd Skynyrd and the annual Kiss Cruise to name a few) as well as our friends at Inside Out Music and look forward to a very successful inaugural launch of PROGRESSIVE NATION AT SEA Feb 18th thru 22nd 2014

We are so excited to take part in this historic maiden voyage and look forward to sharing this one of a kind event with fans from all around the world!"

Fourth Transatlantic album to be recorded in May 2013

26th March 2013
Neal Morse has confirmed that Transatlantic will start work on their fourth album in May.
Here is a quote taken from DPRP:

"We are going to start working on a new Transatlantic album! We have set dates in May and, my friends, it is actually happening! Before I left for the tour (and even just a few days ago) I had a lot of really strong prog music ideas that I’m really excited about presenting to the guys. But, of course everything has to be kind of secret until we actually do it, so I can’t say or tell much more than that, but we’re all really excited about it!

We will probably look for a release in early 2014. But, who knows?! I’m just glad we are doing it!"

NEAL MORSE BAND & THE FLOWER KINGS - on tour together in spring 2013!

20th December 2012
To celebrate "INSIDE OUT MUSIC 20 YEARS ANNIVERSARY" Progressive rock superstars NEAL MORSE and ROINE STOLT take both their bands on a world tour together in selected cities, in spring 2013, for an evening of sunny symphonic prog. Two bands will share the stage – THE FLOWER KINGS with epic new album "Banks Of Eden" and NEAL MORSE with his latest top shelf prog-rocking offering "Momentum" - this double bill will offer an evening of some of the best, most energetic and most melodic and vital progressive rock on the planet since the heyday of ELP, Pink Floyd, Yes and Genesis!

With two members of Transatlantic it is not far away to a Transatlantic mini reunion as grand finale!
ROINE comments: "We hope to make every evening special - with jamming and interacting - a modern "The Last Waltz" that can happen with 11 musicians, no egos and 3,5 hours to kill. There were the times of Fillmore East & Fillmore West in the USA in late 60's, it had all these insanely great bills every time, it's rock history and it’s been in our system since we were teenagers. With The Flower Kings we have fans seeing 4 or 5 shows of a tour and we want to surprise them too. We love our fans dearly and we even know many of them, not only by face, but by name. Those smiling faces are the true reward and it's like seeing old friends. I know so many fans in Peru, Argentina, Indonesia, Greece, Israel, Brazil, Mexico, Japan, Canada, Finland, Norway etc. want to see a show like this, but for geographic, political or health reasons don't have the chance or funds to get to a show like this. But we want to step into their living rooms and bring this joy to everyone, every age so we are planning to record the show, for a future release. Just having 11 musicians on tour together will be great - the sheer musicality onboard that bus will most likely make it implode. We are all looking forward to this grand adventure in February 2013 and to play together and bring all this talent together for a night to remember."
